Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of ryOS, a web-based desktop environment, as hosted at os.ryo.lu. By using ryOS you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

Last updated: June 2026.

1. The service

ryOS is a browser-based, retro-styled desktop environment offering apps such as a file manager, text editor, chat, media players, and more. Most features run locally in your browser; some features rely on servers and third-party providers (see the Privacy Policy).

ryOS is provided as a creative and experimental project. Features may change, break, or be removed at any time without notice.

2. Eligibility

You must be old enough to form a binding contract and to consent to data processing in your jurisdiction (typically at least 13–16). If you use ryOS on behalf of an organization, you represent that you are authorized to accept these Terms for it.

3. Accounts

Some features require an account.

  • You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account and for keeping your credentials secure.
  • Choose a username and content that do not impersonate others or infringe anyone's rights.
  • You may delete your account at any time from Control Panels → Account. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these Terms.

4. Acceptable use

When using ryOS, you agree not to:

  • Break the law or infringe the rights of others, including intellectual-property and privacy rights.
  • Upload, share, or generate content that is illegal, harmful, harassing, hateful, sexually exploitative of minors, or otherwise abusive.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse-engineer for abuse, gain unauthorized access to, or circumvent the security or rate limits of the service.
  • Use the service to send spam, distribute malware, or scrape data in violation of applicable terms.
  • Misuse AI features to generate prohibited content or to evade provider safety policies.

We may remove content or restrict access that we reasonably believe violates these Terms.

5. Your content

You retain ownership of the content you create, upload, or store in ryOS ("Your Content").

  • Most of Your Content stays in your browser. If you enable cloud sync, you grant ryOS the limited rights needed to store, transmit, and display Your Content solely to operate the service for you across your devices.
  • You are responsible for Your Content and for having the rights necessary to use it.
  • You are responsible for keeping your own backups. Use Control Panels → backup to export your data.

6. AI features

AI features generate content based on your input using third-party model providers.

  • AI output may be inaccurate, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate. Do not rely on it as professional advice, and verify anything important.
  • You are responsible for how you use AI output and for complying with the providers' policies.

7. Third-party services and content

ryOS integrates with third-party services (for example AI providers, YouTube, Apple MapKit/MusicKit, Pusher, and others) and can display third-party websites and content (for example via Internet Explorer). ryOS does not control and is not responsible for third-party services or content, and your use of them may be subject to their own terms and policies.

8. Intellectual property

ryOS, including its name, design, and original code, is the property of its author and contributors and is licensed under the terms stated in the project repository (AGPL-3.0). These Terms do not grant you rights to ryOS's trademarks or branding. The open-source license governs your rights to the source code; these Terms govern your use of the hosted service.

9. Disclaimers

ryOS is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, secure, error-free, or that data will never be lost.

10. Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, ryOS and its author and contributors will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of data, profits, or goodwill, arising from or related to your use of the service. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot be excluded under applicable law.

11. Termination

You may stop using ryOS at any time and delete your data via Control Panels. We may suspend or terminate access to the service, in whole or in part, at any time, including for violations of these Terms. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (such as content ownership, disclaimers, and limitation of liability) will survive.

12. Self-hosting

ryOS is open source. If you run your own instance, you operate that deployment and are responsible for its configuration, the third-party keys you enable, and compliance with applicable law. These Terms describe the hosted service at os.ryo.lu; a self-hosted operator may set their own terms.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms as ryOS evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date at the top of this page. Continued use of the service after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.
